Ice Pack Can Help Pitchers with Sore Arm

After six innings pitched, the ice pack goes on if you are a major league pitcher. At least that’s how it has always been. New theories and research shows that regularly icing a weak, worked shoulder can increase the chances of injury. This comes out after research shows that ice is only useful and should only be used if inflammation and swelling occurs in a sore shoulder. A tired shoulder should never be iced. The reason is an increased blood flow is important to help the shoulder heal and build muscle. Ice restricts the body from healing.

When do I use an ice pack? As a pitcher it is important to learn the difference between a sore shoulder and a tired arm. If the arm is sore and hurt it is important to add ice to help reduce the inflammation. If the arm is just worked and tired it is not recommended to ice it. Icing a healthy tired arm will reduce the blood flow and not give the muscles the nutritious blood it needs to fix itself.

What do I do instead of using an ice pack? It is suggested that after a long outing or workout to increase the bodies blood flow by doing some cardio like running while moving the arms. This will increase the blood flow and clear the body of lactic acid. Raising the heart after an outing for around 20 minutes can dramatically increase arm strength and durability.
